CHARACTER NAME: Cosima Niehaus
CHARACTER AGE: 28
SERIES: Orphan Black
CHRONOLOGY: the end of season 3 (3x10)
CLASS: Hero
HOUSING: Wherever is cool!
BACKGROUND:
Orphan Black is the story of Sarah Manning, a rebellious woman looking to turn her life around for herself and her daughter. One fateful night she sees a woman named Beth jump in front of a train to her death-- a woman who looks exactly like her. Sarah sees this as an opportunity to assume Beth’s identity and gain the money she needs to start a new life with her daughter. But instead of a solution to her problems, Sarah finds more problems, as well as more women who look like her. She soon learns that she and the other women are clones, and with this revelation, they are all swept up into a complicated mystery involving assumed identities, a mysterious woman set on eliminating them, the growing threat of the scientists that created them getting too close, a search for a cure for the mysterious clone disease, and the discovery of both their creators and their original. While trying to keep themselves alive, Sarah and her clones search for answers about who they are, where they came from, and where they can go from here.
One of Sarah’s newly found “sisters” is Cosima Niehaus, an evolutionary developmental biology PhD student and the scientist of the expanding Clone Club. As a scientist, Cosima plays an essential role in researching and unraveling the more technical aspects, providing scientific knowledge to her sisters whenever necessary. Unlike the others, Cosima accepts being a clone relatively easily, is even excited by the science of it all. She embraces her clonehood and spends the majority of the first season separate from the majority of the clone drama, focused on researching their biology part time, while continuing to pursue her PhD. Her life isn’t changed drastically until she meets Delphine, a new PhD student, who Cosima immediately finds herself drawn to. Flirting and “crazy science” ensue, despite the fact that Cosima has suspicions about the intentions of her new lover. Delphine’s interest in Neolution, a fringe field of science defined by “self-directed” evolution and lead by Dr. Aldous Leekie, as well as the fact that Cosima knows the other clones have carefully selected monitors (usually in the form of husbands/boyfriends) lead Cosima to believe that Delphine might be more than the hot, French transfer student that she appears to be. But that doesn’t stop Cosima from running headfirst into a relationship with her, against her better judgement. Towards the end of the first season, Cosima finds herself suffering from the mysterious and terminal illness that was plaguing the now-dead European clones. Suffering from the disease and discovering that her first instincts regarding Delphine were correct-- she’s Cosima’s monitor hired by DYAD, the scientific organization behind the illegal cloning experiment that created her and her sisters-- Cosima is faced with a difficult choice. She’s offered a position at DYAD, studying her own biology and the biology of her sisters. It’s an offer that Cosima ultimately can’t turn down, and she joins DYAD, no longer only an experiment, but as an active researcher, with the goal to find a cure for herself and her sisters.
For much of seasons 2 and 3, Cosima is suffering from the mysterious clone illness while tirelessly searching for a cure when she’s able. Her health goes through several ups and downs and she is subjected to various experimental cures, but as of the end of season 3 her health is still a giant question mark. She’s feeling better, but is far from cured.
Of course, there’s a fair share of relationship drama as Delphine and Cosima’s relationship continues to be on and off again, with the two frequently at odds about what is right for Cosima and how much power Delphine should have over her treatments. Add in Delphine’s constant lies, a messy breakup, and a new love interest for Cosima, and it’s no surprise that Sarah’s brother deems their relationship a “transgressive lesbian geek spiral bound to end in tears”. Her relationship drama does distract Cosima from her research duties at times, but she remains dedicated to Clone Club even as she tries to sort out her increasingly complicated love life.
Cosima spends most of her time in the labs of DYAD, but she still makes time to consult with Sarah and Alison, and is a constant confidant, especially for Sarah, who needs all the help she can get while searching for their creators, tracking dangerous male military clones, and hunting for their original. Despite her illness, Cosima remains a valuable member of Clone Club, their personal science consultant and “geek monkey”, though she only lets them call her that.
Even more information of Cosima’s specific role in plot events can be found here.
PERSONALITY:
Cosima Niehaus, evo devo PhD student originally from Berkeley, California, could be considered the “brains” of Clone Club. She’s intelligent, curious, and actively seeking answers to the clones’ origin and genetics. She has a passion for science shown in her ability to take off on scientific tangents in nearly any conversation. She’s who the others call when they need research done, from asking if their fingerprints match to questions about obscure greek mythology, and Cosima tackles this research with enthusiasm-- perhaps too much enthusiasm, if you ask her fellow clones. She’s a borderline genius and often her thoughts are miles ahead of those around her, but she trusts them to keep up. Her excitement is almost contagious, and her clones come to accept it as part of her. When they first meet, it’s no secret that Sarah finds Cosima to be a bit weird and the two are constantly bickering over the phone, but as they grow closer that animosity fades. When trying to convince their creator to help them find a cure, Sarah describes Cosima as “a brilliant scientist” and though it is part of a plea for help, she’s sincere. Sarah and Alison have come to embrace Cosima’s passions.
For all her book smarts, Cosima is not particularly street smart. She’s a terrible liar and is the most naive clone. She continually believes Delphine’s lies again and again, despite having no real reason to trust her. Cosima’s one bout at impersonating a clone is unconvincing at best, a complete failure at worst. While Alison and Sarah can almost seamlessly play the roles of other clones, Cosima does not have the acting or manipulation skills needed. She nearly comes out as a lesbian to Alison’s suburban voters and has to be rescued by Alison mid-speech. That’s not to say Cosima isn’t adaptable. She’s the first to accept her clonehood and she’s able to cope with her changing world more easily than the others are. However, she doesn’t think as well on her feet, and is much more dedicated to formulating and sticking to complex plans. Sarah’s idea of a rescue mission is to go into a DYAD office, guns ready, while Cosima’s is to build a complex device out of a fire extinguisher that her rescuee can use as a weapon. They’re both capable of getting things done, but have very different strategies.
It’s obvious why Cosima is considered the “brains” of Clone Club, but she’s also, in many ways, the heart. Cosima cares about her sisters deeply-- she’s the first to accept them as more than just clone “freaks” and by season 3 she openly says she loves them. Cosima’s also the clone most likely to follow her heart, even despite what logic and reason tell her. As obsessed as she is with science, she sees beyond empirical data and is easily caught up in the beauty and excitement she sees in the natural world. This tendency to follow her heart often gets Cosima into trouble. She knew Delphine was her monitor, but Cosima was so swept up in the idea of Delphine and her love for her that she fell for her anyways, despite knowing their relationship would never be what Cosima wanted it to be.
Cosima is also a very confident person, aware of her strengths and abilities. She’s smart and she knows it, and because of this she has a tendency to believe she’s right. So much so that on the rare occasion that Cosima admits she’s wrong, Sarah jokes that she must be talking to someone else. Cosima can be very stubborn and has a streak of immaturity. Her cheeky sense of humor while usually used for friendly teasing, can take on a biting tone when pushed. Cosima doesn’t always know the appropriate time to turn off her teasing as witnessed by the number of times she poked at Dr. Leekie. She can also be a bit of a brat, even her girlfriends say so, and doesn’t always deal with conflict in the most mature manner. From hanging up on her clones when they get into small arguments to locking Delphine out of her lab after their big fight, Cosima’s first reaction to conflict is usually childish and done rashly. She even quits working at DYAD after a disagreement with Delphine, acting impulsively without considering how it would hinder her search for the cure.
Overall, Cosima is a driven scientist, open about her passions which extend beyond science. She cares deeply for her friends and family and won’t let the looming threat of her illness stop her. She may be the resident quirky science geek, but that’s not the only role Cosima plays, and she’ll make sure you know that. Cosima adapts quickly and is reliable in a crisis, making her the one to contact whenever new trouble arises. Despite all the chaos that surrounds her, Cosima manages to keep her cheeky sense of humor and caring nature, as she determinedly continues “following the science” to the answers she knows only science can give them.
POWER:
Form duplication: Able to make copies of herself. The copies look identical to herself and can move, talk, and perform tasks independently of her. They can exist up to five miles away from her, but the further they are away from Cosima the harder it is for her to control them and the more effort/concentration it takes.
Cell Regeneration: The ability to heal and bring back to normal health all biotic cells, including her own. She can use this ability to keep her illness at bay, though it is a temporary fix and does not cure the disease, only the cellular damage. Repeat curing sessions are necessary to continually restore the cells. She can restore the cells of others’ as well, with contact necessary to begin the regeneration. Again, she would not be able to permanently cure a debilitating, chronic disease, but she could permanently cure wounds, broken bones, etc.

She smiles again, hands moving in small circles, displaying her practically uncontainable enthusiasm.]
You’ve all heard that information is power, right? It’s a cliche, sure, but some cliches are cliches for a good reason. This is one I stand by. If we really wanna figure this place out, we need to pool our data, share our experiences, you get the idea! I was trying to go for old school surveying, but I think the locals are skewing my data and I can only meet so many people in one day. This is way more efficient!
[Not to mention, easier for Cosima to keep track of the data. She has detailed spreadsheets ready and waiting for people’s replies, though she knows well enough to not bore them with the details. Not everyone can appreciate a good spreadsheet. She unearths a pen from her scattered papers and taps it against the screen.]
So who’s ready to answer some questions? I’ll be here all day.

joining the hiatus train
whoops, i am also going to interrupt 10th anniversary celebrations with a hiatus notice
I am celebrating the end of my very first year of my PhD program/a very early birthday (collection season is in August, no trips that aren't collecting rotting fruit are allowed) with a grand adventure to Chicago and Hogwarts aka Florida!!! ALSO FRIENDSHIP!
It is all very exciting and means that threading will likely not happen for the next week or so! I'll continue to pick at my current threads but don't be surprised if I drop off the face of the planet for several days!
This hiatus applies to Vanya/Jade/Norman/Cosima/Cassie! See you all in approximately a week!

hiatus notice
hi all!
On Thursday, I'm heading off on a grand adventure to Seattle and a much needed long weekend away from the lab and grad school responsibilities.
because I have a feeling that I'll want to be totally irresponsible and not even pay attention to tags, I'm calling a hiatus from Thursday - Monday. I will also be preoccupied with friends and the amazing Emerald City Comic Con so I just don't think much tagging will happen. HOWEVER, i'll have my computer so if you need me somewhere feel free to shoot me an email at littlestapocalypse @ gmail or ping me on plurk or whatever! I will be there asap if I'm summoned!
Have an awesome weekend everyone! If I drop a thread, look for me to be bombarding your inbox early next week!
p.s. on yes, this applies to vanya/jade/norman/cosima/cassie
p.p.s. while you wait for my triumphant return, watch my canon! it's all on amazon prime or we can link you to a masterpost! I'm gone for like, five days, it's totally reasonable to watch 20 episodes of a tv show in that time.
p.p.p.s. after watching app me some cast mates, please and thank you! camp clone club will love you forever!

availability notice, semi-hiatus?
hey i figured i should post a thing here for those not following the health drama that is my life right now on plurk!
So, I occasionally get this weird skin condition called lichen planus and it is an extremely painful, itchy, annoying ordeal when it happens. It's been happening for the last couple of weeks and finally after biopsying my skin and a few failed treatments and so much medication the pharmacist knows me by name, I'm going to be starting UV light treatments next week! UV light treatments that are three times a week and over an hour away from my home.
What this means is that my rp availability may be pretty sporadic for a month or two! Treatments last between 6-8 weeks. I should be around but if it ever takes awhile for me to get back to a thread, I'm dealing with health things but I will get back to it! Just thought I'd post a heads up since it'll be a noticeable schedule difference.

psa regarding cosima's appearance!
Hey everyone! I just wanted to throw up a note regarding a change in Cosima's general appearance!
Due to update things, Cosima is sick. She will always have an oxygen tank on her and nose tubes (like so) unless I write otherwise in a tag, since I don't want to be constantly pointing out how sick she is in every tag for the foreseeable future.
Cosima also look paler and sicker sometimes and will be prone to coughing fits, but not always. She's getting healing treatments, but they're not a cure, so her condition will be fluctuating a bit.
Thanks everyone for bearing with me and the fact that we didn't get a cure for Cosima this season!

Thanks everyone for bearing with me and the fact that we didn't get a cure for Cosima this season!
